Dandadan is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yukinobu Tatsu, a former assistant for Chainsaw Man (Fujimoto) and Hell’s Paradise (Yuji Kaku). It’s been running on Shonen Jump+ since April 2021, and has quickly become a cult favourite for its chaotic mix of genres.
Dandadan is a sci-fi, supernatural, romcom, and action blend story that follows Momo Ayase, a high school girl who believes in ghosts but not aliens and Ken Takakura, a nerdy classmate who believes in aliens but not ghosts.
After a bet to prove each other wrong, Momo encounters aliens, and Okarun runs into spirits. Both are proven wrong and get dragged into a world of paranormal chaos, fighting everything from aliens to yokai, all while developing a sweet and awkward relationship.

After a bet with a girl from another class, Momo Ayase, leads them to form a friendship and a series of events that leave him having his family jewels (kintama) disappearing from being cursed by the Turbo Granny, Okarun makes it his mission to find his missing pieces with help from Momo and other allies as they overcome any paranormal obstacles along the way.

Momo Ayase is the female lead of Dandadan and Okarun’s partner-in-chaos. A high school girl with a fiery personality, she was raised to believe in ghosts and yokai by her grandmother, but dismissed them as it made her unpopular at school.
Momo adores the actor Ken Takakura, so much so that she dated an ex-boyfriend only due to his appearance resembling that of the actor. When she teams up with Okarun and learns that his name is also Ken Takakura, she immediately becomes flustered and embarrassed.
Despite the pair being extremely different in their normal lives, Ken and Momo begin to develop a unique fondness for each other, despite trying to hide it from one another.
3. Seikyo Ayase Dandadan Tattoo
Seiko Ayase is Momo’s eccentric grandmother and a powerful medium. She’s a key supporting character in Dandadan, acting as a mentor figure while also providing comic relief with her quirky, no-nonsense attitude. Despite being an older woman, she maintains a youthful appearance and energy, often surprising both Momo and Okarun with her bold personality.

Turbo Granny is an infamous yokai in Dandadan, formerly located in a tunnel at Shono City. She’s a twisted old woman spirit known for her pervy behaviour, crude humour, and terrifying speed. Jiji is Momo Ayase’s childhood friend, whom she once had a crush on. Jiji comes across as relaxed and approachable, but beneath his friendly exterior, he carries emotional baggage, especially surrounding his family and his connection to spirits.

Aira Shiratori is one of Momo and Okarun’s classmates who later joins the main cast. Aira is a fiery, hot-headed girl with strong spiritual sensitivity, making her a natural fit for the bizarre world of yokai and aliens.
Aira becomes possessed by Acrobatic Silky, a yokai that had been stalking her Shiratori ever since she was a little girl. With her powers, Aira becomes swifter, more acrobatic, and capable of using her hair like a whip.

Chainsaw Man is a Japanese manga series created by Tatsuki Fujimoto. It first ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump from December 2018 to December 2020 and then continued in Shōnen Jump+ from July 2022 onward.
Chainsaw Man follows Denji, a poor teenager saddled with his dead father’s debts to the Yakuza. He works as a devil hunter alongside his pet devil, Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil. After being betrayed and killed, Denji fuses with Pochita and becomes Chainsaw Man, a hybrid with the ability to sprout chainsaws from his body.

Mr. Mantis Shrimp is an alien antagonist turned ally in Dandadan. True to his name, he’s based on the real-world mantis shrimp, an ocean creature famous for its speed and destructive strikes. He’s a humanoid alien with shrimp-like features and insane power, making him one of the most dangerous threats the heroes encounter.
Mr. Mantis Shrimp teamed up with the Serpo Aliens to kidnap Okarun in order to earn enough money for his son’s blood transfusion. But following his defeat, he has become a supporting character after Seiko helped in his son’s recovery by gifting him a cow, as milk is the same as his species’ blood.
9. Serpo Alien Dandadan Tattoo
The Serpo Aliens are one of the main extraterrestrial factions in Dandadan. Unlike yokai, the Serpo represent the sci-fi threat in the story. They’re a technologically advanced alien race of only males, obsessed with experimentation, abduction, and domination.
Due to being only male, they have no way of reproducing other than cloning. However, since they cannot evolve further through cloning, they sought to gain reproductive organs by abducting humans from Earth and stealing their reproductive organs (aka “bananas”).

Acrobatic Silky was a minor antagonist who had been stalking Aira Shiratori ever since she was a little girl. When still alive, she was in debt and had to work multiple jobs to care for her only daughter.
Having used some of the money to buy her daughter a dress, the men to whom she owed money came to collect, beating her bloody and kidnapping her child when she couldn’t pay up.
Knowing she would never see her daughter again, she made one last dance on top of a roof before leaping off to her death, with her final thoughts being about her daughter. As a ghost, she was seen by a child medium, Aira, who mistook her for her mother, leading the Yokai to believe that she was Aira’s mother in her previous life and became obsessed with the idea of protecting her.
