What is Anime

Anime is a style of animation originating in Japan, known for its bold art style, expressive characters, and emotionally rich storytelling.

Unlike many Western cartoons, which are often aimed mainly at children, anime spans every genre and age group.

Anime isn’t just one style; it can be cute, dark, realistic, surreal, action-packed, or deeply philosophical, depending on the series or film.

Anime began in Japan in the early 1900s, inspired by both traditional Japanese art and Western animation techniques. The earliest creators experimented with hand-drawn frames and stop-motion, trying to bring stories to life in a completely new way.

Japan started making short animated films around 1917, using simple drawings and paper cut-outs. These early animations were heavily inspired by American works like Disney and by Japanese storytelling traditions such as kamishibai (paper theatre).

The real explosion in Anime came thanks to Osamu Tezuka, often called “the God of Manga.” His work introduced large expressive eyes, cinematic storytelling, and emotional, character-driven plots. He created Astro Boy, the first major anime TV success, whose style became the blueprint for modern anime.

Since then, Anime continued to grow in popularity, with the likes of Mecha, Magical girls, and Space operas dominating the 70s to 80s, and by the time Akira arrived in 1988, anime had earned global respect for its artistry and mature themes.

The 1990s to 2000s saw an explosion in Japanese Anime worldwide, with the success of series such as Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Pokémon, Evangelion, and Studio Ghibli films, to name a few.

With streaming, anime is now more popular than ever, with visually stunning series like Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer, and Jujutsu Kaisen having made it worldwide mainstream.

He runs the Yorozuya (“We do anything” odd-jobs business) with his colleagues and friends Shinpachi Shimura, a guy with glasses, Kagura, an alien girl from the Yato clan with superhuman strength and a bottomless appetite, and Sadaharu, their giant dog who bites people for fun.
